The genre originated and developed in Northern Europe in the early 90’s. We were tied to the “old school” kind when we decided to express our anticlerical beliefs with the same powerful sound. Vox Vulgaris lasted two and a half years only... all this for several problems we met on the way.
The passion and the craving to bring out our art which is the music itself, made us to create the first songs and a two tracks demo tape, recorded on cassette. We decided to undertake the journey together, looking for the way that could lead us to achieve our dream, but...
...unfortunately, the project that was expressing us at our best came to a halt due to a sort of conflict with our surroundings, driven by narrow-minded attitudes directly opposed to ours. It lacked the musical style we were inspired by while listening to the most influential bands.
Reading fascinating stories of musicians on famous journal articles of that time, we got in touch with the Northern Europe world. Unlike them, it was difficult for us to freely express ourselves.
We had a huge trouble to find other musicians with whom build a real band. In a situation like that, the thought to realize what we were meant to do seemed to be even more complicated. There were times when we got a sense of discouragement, despite the craving to keep going. We just wished to express ourselves and develop the musical style which was the only one that fully grab us with unprecedented immediacy.
We spent whole days thinking about how to cope with those barriers. Just one solution seemed to be the best but not the easiest. We had to move, change setting, looking for a more inspiring and suitable situation to achieve our goal... because black metal turned out to be a niche genre in Italy.
At that time, unfortunately, we had no possibility to develop our choice, due to difficulties of other kind. With our great sadness, the journey undertaken together a few years earlier, came to a halt, taking different artistic paths. We parted and we promised to ourselves that one day we would’ve given a second possibility to our black metal project, realizing it no matter what and with great determination.
The year 2011 marked the tragedy... a serious event changed our lives in a dramatic way. We forcefully drove away from music. They were difficult years. We couldn’t play music therefore couldn’t be possible to express our inner world transmitting us a feeling of suffocation, but this aspect wasn’t entirely negative, it actually awakened in us a true determination in order to go back to work at our project in an unconditional and total way.
This comeback was a music and a personal rebirth. Many things changed.
The band’s name was replaced from Vox Vulgaris to Apocryphis referring to apocryphal gospels which are the ones the Church has always rejected, consider them as heretics. Unlike the start-up period, this time we met the right musicians to work and develop with, and give greater depth to our ideas.
Sharing our journey with them it was as much inspiring as crucial. Besides music, we started to look at the project also taking care of all the extra musical aspects and meeting new people whom we compared ourselves with. It was interesting watching the whole work develop from different prospective, never considered before. Afterwards, we recorded in studio our first EP of four tracks. Each step of the recording process was a building block toward achieving the eagerly awaited sound.
Finished mixing, we finally listened to the final result for the first time. The cold and sharp sound turned out to be exactly the same as the one that resounded in us in ages. Everything was perfectly taking shape.
Needless to say, this stage was completely different compared to the previous one. Due to the difficulties of the past, the Apocryphis’ project could take a real shape after a succession of events.
It may sound weird, but as a matter of fact, the fleeting moment we had the impression to completely miss the magic proved to be the most precious one, that only black metal is able to give to us.
After twenty years of silence, we’re back to revive our art.
